Keeping Connecticut Healthy
The state of health and well-being in the United States is in a steady decline. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or cancer account for 70% of all deaths in the US. Physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, smoking, and being overweight or obese are just a few of the risk factors associated with these diseases and conditions. These risk factors all have one thing in common: They are preventable, and can be modified or eliminated by changing our behavior.
The statistics are staggering. Overweight and Obesity in Connecticut have been steadily on the rise since the 1990s; current statistics indicate that 37% of CT residents are overweight, and 18% of residents are obese. In addition, 70% of CT residents report eating less than the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables per day (5 or more servings), 50% smoke or have smoked in the past, and 48% participate in little or no physical activity.
So where does worksite wellness fit in? The average employees probably spends between 1/3 and 1/2 of their waking hours at work. Fitting health and wellness time into these hours can have a huge impact on our overall well-being.
